Information sciences
Information sciences may best demonstrate America's (and California's) shift towards the new, knowledge-based economy, where knowledge-driven businesses replace or transform traditional industries. The information technology sector has emerged as the largest manufacturing industry in the U.S., and California clearly leads the pack. For example, the state has five of the top ten Internet host counties in the nation. The opportunities for applying information sciences to traditional California industries are great in the life sciences, and include health care, agriculture, environment, and marine resources. At the same time, California is host to a rapidly growing bioinformatics, healthcare informatics, and other life science and information technology companies.
